SMUD Solar/Hydrogen Refueling Station
The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) will be formally opening a new solar-powered hydrogen fuel cell vehicle refueling station on April 1st during the NHA conference. The station is part of a joint SMUD, BP, Ford and U.S. Department of Energy project to demonstrate fuel cell vehicles using hydrogen from renewable resources. The station produces hydrogen onsite using power from the sun produced by a large solar panel array. The hydrogen will be used to fuel SMUD fuel cell vehicles and other BP sponsored vehicles in the area. As the solar panels make electricity, an electrolyzer uses that energy to separate water into hydrogen to make clean fuel for the vehicles.

The project is the next step in a nearly two-decade long effort by SMUD testing alternative fuel vehicles that utilize technology to help clean the air in Sacramento, and reduce environmental impacts. The solar array that powers the station, producing the hydrogen, also delivers 80 kilowatts of power produced by the sun, which is enough power to provide electricity for about 40 single-family homes. The station is integrated into SMUD’s corporate campus and features educational elements to provide information to the public on hydrogen, climate change and alternative fuels.
